Andy's honours include,

  • Scottish Schools
  • Scotland Under 19
  • Scotland Under 21
  • Scotland B
  • Scotland A
  • Scotland
  • The British Lions
  • World XV v NZ, 1993

Andy became the first Scotland captain to lift the Calcutta Cup in 10 years when he led Scotland to their win against England in April 2000 and went on to lead Scotland on their 2000 tour to New Zealand.

He was first capped out of Dundee High School FP against England in 1992, and later moved to Bath, whom he led to victory in the 1997-98 European Cup. Andy joined Glasgow Caledonians (now Glasgow Rugby) as captain for the start of season 1999-2000.

The first of his five Scotland A appearances was as captain against Ireland in 1992-93.

He has also led Scotland no fewer than three times on overseas tours,

  • South Pacific in 1993
  • Southern Africa in 1997
  • New Zealand in 2000.

He also captained the Scotland Development XV against New South Wales in 1996.

At the end of the 1993 tour he flew over to New Zealand to join the British Lions as a replacement for the injured Robert Jones and was also given a surprise call on to the bench for the last Test on the 2001 British & Irish Lions tour to Australia.

Andy also toured with Scotland in North America (1991), Australia (1992), and New Zealand (1996). He is one of only two players to have appeared in the Scottish Schools’ team over three seasons, and he went on to play for the national under-19 and under-21 teams as well as Scotland B.
