Tom's honours include,

  • Scottish Students/Development Squad
  • Scotland A
  • Scotland
  • The British Lions

A product of Rannoch School in Perthshire, Tom represented Scottish Schools on his first steps to representative honours. He had two stints with Dundee HSFP, returning to the club as a Lions hero for a season after the 1997 Lions Tour to South africa.

He has also played for the Scotland Development XV and made a try-scoring debut for Scotland A against the 1996 Australian tourists. After only one A cap Tom was eleveated to the full Scotland side and a mere 3 caps later was selected for the 1997 British Lions squad to tour South Africa. He made a magnificent contribution to the 2-1 Test series success and again in the 2001 tour to Australia. He is the only player along with Martin Johnston to have played all 6 Lions' tests on those two tours.

Tom wore the captain's armband for Scotland in 2001.

In 2005 Tom announced his retirement from international rugby to concentrate on playing for his club Northampton.
