Frank's honours include,

  • Scotland Coach

Frank was educated at the High School of Dundee, Strathclyde University and Carnegie School of PE in Leeds. He taught PE at Guiseley School, West Yorkshire and was head of PE and Director of Rugby at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh from 1983-2000 (turning Merchiston into Scotland’s top rugby school). He also took a sabbatical and taught and coached at the renowned Southport School in Queensland’s Gold Coast.

In 1992 he accepted his first national challenge, when asked to coach a Scotland under-16s team. He has also coached club rugby at Dundee HSFP, was assistant coach at the Caledonia Reds from 1997-98 and during his time at Edinburgh Rugby, piloted the team to the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup – the first Scottish team to reach that stage of Northern Hemisphere rugby’s premier club competition and led them to challenge at top of the Celtic League in season 2005/2006.

Frank's first taste of the senior international squad came in 1998 when he was technical coach on the Scotland tour of Australia that year.

In April 2005 he was appointed Scotland interim coach, leading Scotland to victories against the Barbarians and Romania and on September 15, 2005 Frank was confirmed as Scotland coach until the Rugby Union World Cup in 2007.
