JJ came to Dundee in 1991 from Wellington club Petone who were enjoying a rich vein of success in the early 90's.
His prowess on the park attracted the attention of ambitious English side, West Hartlepool and JJ moved south as rugby entered the professional era. A further move to Italian side l'Aquila saw him make his mark alongside some of Italy's internationalists. League rugby in Italy and playing in the Heineken Cup against the best in Europe brought him to the attention of the Netherlands national side. His caps include a Twickenham encounter against the might of the English front row.
JJ returned to Dundee in season 2002/2003 and was a major part of that year's revival and in helping take the club to three Murrayfield final's day appearances in succession before retiring from the game in 2005.
